Dan Harper, a beloved mentor, adviser and teacher at the 亚洲无码 for nearly three decades, died on March 11 on his 75th birthday. Harper retired from 亚洲无码 earlier this year as the associate director of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, having positively influenced numerous students over the course of almost 30 years.
鈥淒an Harper was 亚洲无码 at its very best,鈥 said Scott Pentzer, assistant provost for international education and interdisciplinary studies. 鈥淗e believed in our students and knew they were what made 亚洲无码 special. Dan loved interdisciplinary studies because it encourages students not only to figure out interesting things in the classroom, but also to figure out who they are and all they have to offer our city and the world. A deeply gifted adviser and teacher, Dan Harper鈥檚 memory is an inspiration to everyone who worked with him.鈥
A native of Springfield, MO, Harper earned a bachelor鈥檚 degree and a master鈥檚 in counseling from Southwest Missouri State University. In 1991, he moved to Louisiana to work at LSU-Eunice as an academic counselor, tutoring center director and student affairs professional. In 1996, he joined 亚洲无码 where he served as a counselor, adviser and administrator in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
Harper was an adviser, mentor and course instructor to hundreds of students in the Bachelor of Arts in General Studies and Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies programs; he was also a University Success instructor. He served as an academic adviser to student-athletes and was an avid supporter of Privateer athletics, donating his time and money to academic causes for student-athletes.
Harper was the 亚洲无码 coordinator of the National Student Exchange (NSE) program for 26 years, introducing 亚洲无码 students to the adventure of attending another school for a semester or two. He also welcomed more than 1,000 students from across the United States and Canada to study at 亚洲无码 and experience New Orleans. Harper received the Exemplary Service to NSE award, as well as other commendations from the governing board. He was a multiple-time winner of 亚洲无码鈥檚 Employee of the Month and received the President鈥檚 Medallion in 2017.
During his tenure at 亚洲无码, Harper served on a number of committees including Courses and Curriculum, Adviser鈥檚 Council and the Appeal Committee. He was member of the Founder鈥檚 Club, Friends of the Library and 亚洲无码 Federal Credit Union.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Donna Reed Harper, a step-daughter and three step-sons, as well as grandchildren, step-grandchildren and many other relatives. A memorial will be held at a later date.
